Epic & Steam Restore Missing Save/Backups

Modified on Tue, 24 Sep at 4:32 PM

Updated September 2024 - Epic and Steam details have changed as we have separated these folders individually if users have both versions:

Sometimes crashes, power outages, system malfunctions, and other unpredictable situations may lead to a loss of data, or data corruption.  This can happen with your world save, as well as with your character save, or even both. For this reason, we have a backup system for world files in place.
In the same folder that stores your world and character files, the mentioned world backup files are stored as well.

To access this folder, please do the following:
1. Go to My Computer/This PC (you can search for it as well in your Windows Search box, or by pressing Windows Key on your keyboard)

STEAM USERS

2. Go to C:\Users\<Your PC Username>\AppData\Local\Moria\Saved\SaveGamesEpic

EPIC USERS
2. Go to C:\Users\<Your PC Username>\AppData\Local\Moria\Saved\SaveGamesSteam

3. Once inside, the content of the folder should look something like this:

File(s) starting with "MC_" represents your character save file(s). File(s) starting with "MW_" represents your world and world backup files. World backup files are all the "MW_" files that end with ".##.bak", with ".##" representing the number of a backup (.00 being the most recent), and ".bak" representing a file extension.

Before making any changes to these files, we suggest making a copy of this entire folder onto your desktop just in case, so you can always restore it.

In case you do not have any "MW_#####.sav" file(s) in this directory, right-click on the most recent backup file, click on rename, and rename the .##.bak part to .sav, as shown below:
In case you do have a "MW_#####.sav" file(s) but the world is not showing in the game, delete the .sav file and repeat the process from the above.

NOTE: In case of deleting a world save file to replace it with a backup one, especially in case of multiple world saves, make sure that you rename the corresponding world backup file (file names of the original world save and backup world need to be identical after the renaming is finished).

We cannot guarantee that this will restore your missing Dwarf/World.
