Xbox Internet and Network Troubleshooting

We know that sometimes players may have connectivity issues and we’d like to help!

Basic Troubleshooting

We understand that players may sometimes experience connectivity issues on Xbox, and we're here to help with a few common things you can try if you're having trouble.

Fully Restart a Host and Joiner's Game State

Sometimes when a game has been running for a long time, a session can experience connectivity issues.  To ensure that the game is fully started "fresh" it is sometimes helpful to reset this world as follows:

The host exits the current game world from the game menu:

  • Tab over to the System menu, and select Leave World, Confirm
  • At the Main Menu, hit the Xbox button on your controller to see the Xbox menus
  • Scroll down to the Return to Moria game icon on the menu and hit the 3 lines button
  • At this popup menu, go down to Quit and press A
  • This will force close the app completely.
  • Restart your Xbox and launch a new game,
  • Any other players also should do the same thing - force close the app, and restart the Xbox just to be sure the session is terminated.
  • Then have the host load this same world, and host a fresh game with a new code

Connectivity Test

Here are some simple steps to make sure your Xbox is properly connected to the internet and recognized by the Xbox Network.

Note: Return to Moria will be playable offline if you are not connected to the Internet and do not have an online Xbox Live account, but you will not be able to host or join any games.

Steps to Test Your Xbox Connection:

Step 1: Go to the "Settings" menu from the Home screen.

Step 2: Select "Network Settings."

Step 3: Choose "Test Network Connection."

Step 4: Review the test results.

Next Steps:

If your test shows "It’s all good" and your NAT type is "Open" or "Moderate," you should be able to host or join online games. If it shows "Strict" NAT, read on for more information.

NAT Types:

  • Open NAT (Type 1): Fully compatible with Xbox Live and peer-to-peer games like Return to Moria. Best for hosting online games.

  • Moderate NAT (Type 2): Common with most internet setups but may require additional configuration for peer-to-peer connections.

  • Strict NAT (Type 3): May not be compatible with Xbox Live and can limit your ability to connect to online games. See this following link to Xbox support, for further troubleshooting:

Port Forwarding:
Return to Moria uses Xbox networking for online multiplayer. Some players have found that opening certain ports on their router can help with connectivity issues. Port forwarding allows specific communication between devices and your network.

For Xbox, the following ports should be forwarded:

  • TCP: 80, 443, 3074

  • UDP: 88, 500, 3074, 3544, 4500

Since internet service providers (ISPs) and routers differ, you may need to refer to your router's manual or contact your ISP for guidance on setting up port forwarding.

Manual DNS Settings:

Some players have found success by changing their DNS server settings.
One commonly used DNS option is Google’s DNS:

  • Primary DNS: 8.8.8.8

  • Secondary DNS: 8.8.4.4

To change this on Xbox:
Step 1: Go to "Settings" and select "Network" again as per the previous chapter.

Step 2: This time choose "Advanced Settings."

Step 2: This time choose "Advanced Settings."

Step 3: Select "DNS Settings"

Step 4:Select “Manual”

Step 5: You may now enter the Primary and Secondary DNS.

There are many public DNS solutions such as this and you should confirm before trying these that such a solution will be available in your region.
