Top tip: Start in campaign! Not only does it have a great story line, if you try to start with sandbox it will likely leave you confused and frustrated.

Map / Exploring

  • Exploration is everything! The world is big and not meant to be rushed, take the time to look around – including looking up. Even if you think something is a dead end, check anyway and you may find a hidden path.
  • The world is vertical but the map is flat. Most of the areas have multiple depths to explore, make sure you look absolutely everywhere. Some paths are even hidden behind mining walls. You might look at your map and think you’ve explored everything, but the bump out to show a room opening might be hidden by an area you have explored above or below it.
  • Press M to open your map, then X to mark a location. This is a great way to mark places you want to come back to.
  • To re-name a map stone: open your map, click on that map stone then select Edit.
  • When you build or repair a map stone, make sure you *activate *it. It does not work unless you activate it.
  • You can change the icon of your camp to a tent, which is a great way to signal your main base. Open your map and click on the icon for your camp and change the icon there.
  • You will sometimes come across things that you can’t yet use. A good example of this is the map stone located in your first outpost, it’s going to be a while before you can actually repair it. This will happen throughout the game, so as you come across something and don’t have what is needed to use it, just take note of the mystery and eventually it will reveal itself.
